The summer is here and with that comes a new season for summer recreation, tourism, and sport programs. These types of programs are usually managed by the Recreation Manager of the facility offering the program, such as, your organization’s Office of Event Management, your city’s Convention Visitor Bureau (CVB), your town’s Parks and Recreation Department or your local YMCA. That manager needs to have the proper education to be able to perform at their highest capabilities, and the United States Sports Academy has a new program coming for those looking to further their education in the Recreation Management field from global perspectives.
The Academy will offer a Master of Sport Science Degree (MSS) with a major in Recreation Management beginning 1 September 2015. The program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to assume a leadership role in the development and management of recreation, tourism, events and fitness programs in a variety of settings.
This emerging field in the world of sport demands the type of professional graduates the Academy has produced for the last 43 years. The graduates of this new program will be the leaders in recreation management for the 21st Century.
Dr. Erwei Dong is the Chair of Recreation Management for the Academy. He earned his doctorate degree from Pennsylvania State University in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Management and has more than 10 years of higher education experience with numbers of research publications in the United States, Japan, and China. Dr. Dong will be busy over the next few months working on course materials and tying up all of the loose ends of the program before its launch in the fall.
The 33 semester hour program includes three MSS core courses, three required major courses, two electives in the major, and a Mentorship that gives each student hands-on experience to apply the knowledge learned from marketing, administration, tourism and event management to authentic case studies in the online classroom. The Academy offers rolling enrollments, which allows students to begin their program of study at any time – you never need to wait for the next semester!
