“Supporting the work of the World Food Programme on the frontlines of hunger is a personal decision about a cause that is very close to the hearts of me and my family,” said Football Club (soccer) Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho as he announced his decision to be an ambassador for WFP and the fight against hunger.

Mourinho, one of the world’s most successful football managers, will serve as a Global Ambassador Against Hunger for the UN organisation. “Jose Mourinho has achieved almost every success at the top of the game of football and we are delighted that he is now taking on a new challenge to help us reach Zero Hunger,” said WFP Deputy Executive Director, and Chief Operating Officer, Amir Abdulla. “We need strong, respected and committed partners to help us eliminate hunger in our lifetimes and I have no doubt Jose will deliver in his role as a WFP Ambassador Against Hunger.”

Mourinho will play an influential role as a WFP Ambassador, advocating on behalf of WFP’s work in countries that are most affected by hunger and engaging his fans in the push for zero hunger in our lifetimes. Mourinho and his wife Matilde, who is also being appointed as a Special Ambassador for WFP school feeding programmes, are expected to visit WFP operations in sub-Saharan Africa in the next few weeks. Jose and Matilde Mourinho join a powerful team of WFP Ambassadors including sporting legends such as marathon runner Paul Tergat, footballer Kaká, US philanthropist Howard Buffett, actor Drew Barrymore, singer Christina Aguilera.
