Let’s be honest: running can be boring, grueling, and straight-up difficult for beginners and seasoned runners alike. Sometimes you need some help, and that’s where iPhone and Android running apps have your back. Check out the best running apps and a few wild cards for the more playful runner.

5.) Runtastic
If you’re a stats addict, look no further. Runtastic tracks duration, calories burned, speed, pace, incline, weather, and heart rate. This app is complete with an audio coach and goal-setting features, and the integrated music player keeps you running to the beat.

4.) Endomondo
Endomondo is capable of tracking over forty fitness activities! It keeps a detailing log of your activities and stats, and an audio coach keeps you going. Endomondo syncs with wearable devices like Garmin and Android Wear if you don’t always have your phone on you. It also allows you to post your progress on social media and challenge friends to races.

3.) Adidas Train & Run
This app is fantastically attractive and multifaceted. It’s complete with training schedules and exercises, real-time coaching, and hundreds of free workout plans. It tracks your steps throughout the day as well as calories burned and distance covered.

2.) Runkeeper
Runkeeper’s a fan favorite, and for so many reasons. You can pre-plan routes with it, track your progress with a real-time audio guide, and pick out advanced training plans made by professionals. What makes this app particularly cool is it syncs up with Android Wear, Fitbit, and other apps like MyFitnessPal. It also has specifically designed training plans for the 10K, half marathon, and full marathon.

1.) Nike+ Running App
This one seriously has it all, and it’s in a readable, easy to use, attractive format as well. Audio feedback coaches you as you go, the Nike+ Coach gives you training tips, and you can set personal goals. You can also challenge friends to races, too! Bonus: there are no sneaky in-app purchases. It’s 100 percent free.

3.) RockMyRun
RockMyRun doesn’t have personal training capabilities, but it does sync up with more in-depth apps like Nike+, Runkeeper, and Runtastic. Research proves running to music with a high BPM (beats per minute) keeps you going longer and harder. Because of this, RockMyRun offers thousands of mixes that adjust the beat and rhythm to keep you going.

2.) Couch Potato to 5K
It’s exactly what it sounds like. If you’re struggling to get in shape and you need a goal, the 5K is a classic. This app trains you to conquer the 5K in eight weeks with an audio coach to push you along.

1.) Zombies, Run!
This app had to make the list because it’s absolutely hilarious. You could play video games on your couch. Or you could get up and run your butt off in a live-action zombie video game. This app is complete with an interesting narrative, voice actors, and lots of zombies to run from.
