Munich looks for new memorial for 1972 Olympic Israeli victims

1

Munich is looking for a new location for the proposed memorial for the Israeli victims of the 1972 Olympic massacre , after residents protested against the original location on the so-called Connolly Hill between the Olympic Village and the sports facilities. They complain in a petition, which in the meantime has been signed by 1,000 citizens, among other things, that they would no longer be able to toboggan there. Bavaria’s Minister of Culture, Ludwig Spaenle, told the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, that he wanted to reconsider the placement and possibly find a new location within the Olympic Village. “This project is a very sensitive one, and I want to arrange it with allround agreement”, the Minister is quoted as saying. He said that it was very important to him also out of respect for the victims.

The protest against the location only arose during the last two weeks, after it has been known for
over a year, where the memorial was planned to be erected according to the plans of the Brückner &
Brückner architects . The plan provides for cutting the hill horizontally and supporting the peak on
pillars, each of which would be dedicated to one of the victims. As a result exhibition space would be
created in the lower interior which would also allow a view of the historic places: the sports venues and the Olympic Village, where Palestinian terrorists raided the quarters of the Israeli Olympic team. Spaenle did not want to say where there could be another suitable place; but he said he was certain a solution could be found. The search was now on within a radius “of a few hundred meters”.
