Cal Will Keep Three Sports: Is Title IX at the Core of Decision?

The University of California announced late last week that it would restore 3 of the 5 sports it had announced a few months ago it would cut to deal with a large projected deficit in the athletic department.  The decision also came amid reports that the California state legislature is going to cut funding for the upcoming fiscal year for the University of California system by some $500 million.

The restored sports are men’s rugby, women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse.  The original plan was to change the status of rugby from a varsity to a club sport.  The other two sports still scheduled to be cut are men’s baseball and men’s gymnastics.

There are those who feel that a major factor in the most recent decision is the criticism that came the athletic department’s way over plans to cut two women’s sports and claims that this would violate Title IX.
